Expansion tanks located on the load side of a geothermal water-to-water heat pump, air-to-water heat pump, or on a boiler system, are intended to prevent over pressurization of the system as the water temperature rises. These expansion tanks have the opposite purpose of a geothermal expansion tank on the source side (ground loop side) of a geothermal system.
